Press release:The bright shiny future of X-Plane
Press Release: The Bright, Shiny Future of X-Plane
Note: This “press release” was posted April 1.
Hello, I am Austin Meyer, author of X-Plane, and I am announcing some major new improvements and pricing strategies for X-Plane 10.1, due out in a few weeks!
First of all, starting with X-Plane 10.1, we will be removing almost all of the world-wide dynamic scenery that X-Plane is known for. It is simply too much work for us to create, maintain, and improve this kind of massive database, so we are cutting the Global Scenery out of X-Plane starting with version 10.1. Of course, we still need to have some scenery to fly over, so, to keep our jobs simple, we will be cutting the scenery down to the smallest and most geographically isolated area we can imagine: Hawaii. We chose Hawaii because that is such a small area that we can very easily create and distribute it. As well, this tiny flying area will be totally static. There will be no moving cars, no dynamic lighting, and no living cities. No immersive 3-D world loaded with AI cars and planes to fly in. There is simply no need for this complex and dynamic environment and it is actually a very difficult job for us to continue to provide this stuff for you.
As well, we have grown tired of supplying so many airplanes. It takes effort for us to build the countless airplanes that we do, so we are cutting the fleet way down. Starting with X-Plane 10.1, rather than having about sixty-five airplanes, ranging from the Cessna 172 to the Space Shuttle, with the SR-71, X-15, B-2, Piaggo Avanti, and Boeing 747 in between, we will cut X-Plane down to two airplanes. Both single-engine props. That is simply all of the airplanes that we feel the need to give you in a simulator like this. And, you will no longer be able to design your own airplanes to test how they would fly in reality, as Plane Maker will be removed entirely. I see no need for anyone to have any planes other than the two that we give you. So, rather than the sixty-five planes that come with X-Plane and the thousands of others that are freely downloadable from the net, and the ability to make any airplane you can imagine for free, you will be restricted to two airplanes. We may let you buy three additional aircraft as add-on purchases at some point in the future, though. These will be incredibly boring single-engine props, though, and will be surprisingly expensive.
Also new for 10.1 will be a new “flight model” for X-Plane! Unlike previous versions of X-Plane, this model will not have unneeded things like “accuracy.” We here at Laminar Research feel that “accuracy” is over-rated, and the most important thing that we can do is make sure that X-Plane is so easy to use that nobody feels sad that they cannot fly like a professional on their first flight. Marketing assures us that customers “feel better” if they have no challenge. Certainly, the feeling that you can fly is more important than actually being able to fly. For myself, I cannot think of a single reason that anyone would actually want to know how to fly a real airplane! Better to leave actual flying to someone else, and simply have a game that is accessible to all. So, the new flight model will be designed by our marketing team to be accessible even to toddlers. Starting with 10.1, the actual laws of physics need not be applied… why would the laws of physics matter to anyone? Marketing is more important than physics!
New also will be the removal of all navigation, air traffic control, and real-weather options, since they are somewhat challenging to master and would be too much work to properly code. Since these elements of aviation may pose “challenges” for “some,” we have decided to remove those features from the sim entirely so that nobody can enjoy them.
Also, we will be changing our pricing structure. Version 10.1 will be free, but by the time you have bought the tiniest quantity of add-ons, you will have paid us a notable amount and never be able to expand upon that without paying us more. And more. And more.
Our programmers did notice that this update to X-Plane 10 will make it completely useless, but our marketing team has decided upon the perfect solution to this problem! We are going to “spruce it up” by adding jewels in the sky! You will aim one of the two airplanes you get towards those jewels! When you do so, there will be a little noise that is played, or something like that… our marketing department is still working out the details.
Also, we at Laminar Research have noticed that it is a somewhat formidable achievement to make X-Plane work on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It simply involves a decent amount of knowledge, savvy, and work. Also, we love the constant viruses, crashes, and frustrations that we go through with Windows so frequently, so we have decided to remove support for Mac and Linux and just provide X-Plane on Microsoft Windows. We here at Laminar Research believe that the success of Apple is just a fad, and that Microsoft will be the future of computing, since we all love Microsoft Windows so much, just like we know you do.
So, hopefully this will make X-Plane have more “mass market appeal,” and therefore be a better sim for all of us!
To the future!
austin

UPDATE!
Release Notes (Updated 18/3)
X-Plane 10.04 Release Candidate 2
Manifold pressure works the way it did in 10.03. We'll revisit better manifold pressure indications in a future beta when there's more time to get it right.
Trim setting labels in Plane-Maker's control tab fixed.
X-Plane 10.04 Release Candidate 1
Bug fix for ATC issuing altimeter on descent.
Fixed pilot-heading dataref to put sim in command-look mode.
Fixed parsing of OBJs with hard surfaces.
X-Plane 10.04 Beta 7
Beta 7 is out now. Note that to get it you need the new 3.1 installer. If you try to run the old installer, it will give you an error; if you simply update from the "about box", the new installer will be downloaded for you.
With this new installer, the installer and updater are one program. See here for more info than you ever wanted to know.
Lots of new art!!!
The C-130 is included!
Lit textures on cities and more city facades.
Tuning of spill lights in the airport library to improve fps.
Tuning and revision to natural terrain textures and forests.
For users with the X-Plane 10 Global DVD, you will get Aerosoft's European airports if you install scenery for those areas, or if you update and have those areas already installed.
Bug Fixes:
Fixed crash when loading airplanes or quitting, introduced in beta 6.
Fixed crash at EDDM on Linux (due to ATC taxi layout autogen running off the rails.)
Fixed missing sky and clouds with P180, x737 and other wide panels when 4x SSAA and HDR are in use.
Fixed the nasty bumps that airplanes were seeing when taxiing on runways at high altitude airports.
Fixed multithreaded scenery load on Windows. This may help some users with flashing triangles.
Rendering Engine & Scenery
Object exclusion zones now also exclude autogen, so scenery packs that get rid of default buildings now get rid of the v10 default autogen. There is not going to be an "Exclude autogen" - just use the objects exclusion zone!
Objects placed at high altitudes should now be at the correct location.
Latest apt.dat data from Robin included.
Plugin bug fixes, included in this beta:
XPLM returns a version with an extra digit, to match v9.
XPLM load/save data file APIs fixed.
De-icing failure datarefs fixed.
Datarefs.txt now matches the sim.
Refinements:
Manifold pressure model and Real-Weather reading are all improved... Now the manifold pressure model is based on real physics just like the rest of X-Plane (instead of just following the values entered in Plane-Maker) and the Real-Weather reading is refined to work with more accuracy and read reports in more countries, where formats can vary somewhat.
X-Plane 10.04 Beta 6
It's just like X-Plane 10.04 beta 5, but with the texture files back! See below for the fixes!
X-Plane 10.04 Beta 5
Note: Beta 5 was pulled due to missing texture files.
Clouds:
Cloud performance has been tuned. The cloud slider is not calibrated the way it was in 10.04b4; please don't worry about the number you see. Tune the slider to get the trade-off of quality and performance you want on your computer. The "100%" mark represents what we think a high-end system might show; you can go past this if you really liked the older high settings from previous betas, but realistically there's no need to do this.
The far view clouds should look less strange from orbital altitudes.
ATC:
Controllers now issue altimeter settings to aircraft on handoffs, on descents OUT of a flight level and every 50nm when appropriate.
Controllers now expect aircraft to fly with the correct altimeter setting and also properly monitors aircraft at flightlevels expecting them to be flying at a PRESSURE altitude (with their altimeters set to 29.92). At this moment, the transition level for the WORLD is set to 18,000 feet as it is in the USA. In the future, this will vary based on region.
AI aircraft are spawned at more appropriate speeds. In the past, they were spawned too slowly which caused them to stall and lose altitude which caused ATC to constantly nag them to regain their altitude. This was the primary cause for radio congestion!
Improved taxi routings across the world so they're a bit smarter.
Rendering:
The 3-d cockpit draws correctly for multi-monitor configurations with offset views on the side.
Our low-level OpenGL setup on Windows is now done a little bit differently; this change was recommended by people at NVidia who are very smart. But if you are running on Windows and you _can_ run 10.03 but you cannot start up the new beta at all, please file a bug!!
ATTR_draped now works with objects that do not have any LOD statements! There was a previous bug in X-Plane so that if you used ATTR_draped and did not have ATTR_LOD anywhere, the sim would not draw the draped geometry. This is now fixed, so ATTR_draped really does work as a drop-in replacement to ATTR_poly_os. Docs coming soon!!
Scenery:
Fixed facades in the airport library that were generating errors on load.
The roof edge of urban downtown facades should look correct.
DRM:
We are reworking our installer and DVD detection. If the sim won't go out of demo mode, but 10.03 works correctly, please be sure to file a bug!
MORE COOL NEW STUFF:
Compressor stall failures are refined, and can be solved by pulling fuel to the engine to shut it down.
Aircraft icing is now a bit more aggressive and realistic, and flexible with the ability to add 2 switches for AOA heat,
pitot heat, static port heat, engine inlet heat, prop heat, and wing heat! This lets you control these systems more precisely... and expect the correct results from their operation in flight!
from Austin - 2012-02-11
X-Plane 10.04 Beta-3 is here now!
Just some little bug-fixes, and the DVD should only be checked once pr day, even if you run the sim any times per day... might be a bit more convenient
Have at it and let me know how it goes!

X-Plane 10.04 Beta-2
We are really moving towards REFINING the app here, getting the sim running just exactly the way we EXPECT it to.
This update has a good handful of bug-fixes, and these bug-fixes are getting into the real nitty-gritty stuff (multiple different FMS's in the same plane? quicktime movie compression not quite detailed enough for you? these are the types of things we have tuned for this release)
Anyhoo, run the updater from X-Plane.com to get it, and go to http://wiki.x-plane.com/Beta to see all the new stuff!
Have at it and let me know hoe it goes!

X-Plane Demo Installer
As of 24 November 2010,Laminar Research released the major update of the flight simulator X-Plane 10
It is said that the demo is released on 24/11 and the disks on 7/12.
I was downloading and installing the X-Plane Demo and realised that the demo installation is taking too long, 10 Hours at 30mbps. No connection problems but that 50,000 users are downloading their copy of the X-Plane trial version.
If X-Plane is releasing their first disk,I bet the Laminar research and Amazon stores are gonna be flooded with people!!!!
PS: X-Plane 10 (App Only) is 3 GB of Data!
Download the demos via torrent -uTorrent required for downloads
Or download the Updater to update your copy of XP10!

The simulation is a major update to the previous version, 9.70 as in terms of the scenery and bug fixes Scenery is auto-generated,and some airports are already installed with the global overlays and terrain.
Roads and objects are also fixed, and bridges suits the scenery as of reality. The key commands has changed, such as Shift-Space for screenshots
Mobile apps still remain stagnant at the previous versions, and updates will come in a matter of time.
The latest demo installers are released for Windows,Mac and Linux
Due to the promotion of the new software, all pages in the x-plane website redirects to the homepage.
